‘Send her back’: BNP renews demand to extradite Sheikh Hasina after landslide win

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has renewed its demand for the extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from India following its sweeping victory in the general elections. Senior leader Salahuddin Ahmed said the party supports diplomatic efforts already initiated to bring her back to Bangladesh to stand trial.

Ahmed stated that the matter is being pursued through official channels and rests between the foreign ministries of the two countries. He emphasised that the extradition request should proceed in accordance with established laws and bilateral agreements, adding that the BNP has consistently pressed for her return through legal means.

Hasina, who has been living in New Delhi since her ouster after the August 2024 mass uprising, was sentenced to death in absentia in November 2025 by a special tribunal on charges of crimes against humanity linked to the violent crackdown during the unrest. In recent remarks, she described the latest elections in Bangladesh as a “sham”.

India has confirmed that it received Bangladesh’s extradition request and said the matter is under examination as part of judicial and internal legal processes. Dhaka has invoked the bilateral extradition treaty in seeking her return.

While pressing for Hasina’s extradition, the BNP also underscored its desire for balanced and respectful relations with neighbouring countries, including India. Ahmed said the party seeks friendly ties built on mutual respect, sovereign equality and cooperation.
